Debunking the Certificate IV in Training and Assessment myths
19 Jul 2017
Q: Do I need to upgrade when I already have the TAA40104 or TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment?
A: The TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment is still the accepted qualification to deliver nationally accredited courses in the workplace and for Registered Training Organisations. The latest TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment has superseded TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment which means there are additional units that you will need to complete if you wish to upgrade your qualification.
If you do not currently hold the relevant units you will need to complete by 1 April 2019 as stated by Assistant Minister for Vocational Education and Training, the Hon. Karen Andrews MP in a press release, Strengthening trainer and assessor skills.
These units include TAELLN411 Address Adult Language, Literacy and Numeracy Skills and TAEASS502 Design and Develop Assessment Tools. There have also been changes made to TAEASS401 Plan Assessment Activities and Processes and TAEASS403 Participate in Assessment Validation.
The qualification was upgraded because the quality of providers offering training was called into question and it was decided that an update to the curriculum was necessary to meet the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) benchmark. Also, all vocational education qualifications are routinely revised to meet industry demands, needs and standards.
CIT Solutions is offering a Bridging Program for trainers and assessors who hold the TAE40104 or TAE40110 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment. The program provides the additional units at half the cost of the full qualification. For more information, visit our website.
Q: I am not yet qualified but I am considering becoming a trainer, should I enrol in the latest qualification?

Q: What opportunities will be available once I become a qualified trainer and assessor?
A: Once you are qualified with a TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment you will be able to teach vocational education. If you want to teach in certain areas of vocational education such as construction, safety, nursing or finance you will need to be a subject matter expert or qualified in that area to be able to teach.
What is a subject matter expert? It’s a person who has a significant amount of experience in a particular subject matter, such as workplace health and safety, film production or hairdressing.

If you are a qualified carpenter, chef, have a qualification in accounting or IT and you gain a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment, you will then be able to teach in that field in the workplace and for Registered Training Organisations.
Q: Will I just learn how to train others?
A: Sure you will gain the skills you need to train others in vocational education, how to develop dynamic course materials that will engage and excite and you’ll learn how to assess competencies. But you’ll also learn how training and assessment fits into developing people for their job role and their industry. You’ll learn how that fits into today’s economy and the responsibility you commit to when you step in front of a group to teach.
You will also learn how to plan, organise and deliver group-based learning, and how to facilitate learning in the workplace specific to vocational education. You will also learn how to plan and design assessment processes and activities. Most importantly, the new TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment will teach you how to address adult language, literacy and numeracy skills and how to assess so that you are better equipped to develop students at varying levels of comprehension.
It’s a big commitment to take on such a challenge and it isn’t for everyone, but the rewards are worth it.
It’s a goal of mine to have my learners leave the classroom with confidence in their new found skills, and the drive and desire to learn more. That’s the role of a facilitator, we facilitate learning. Felicity Mullens, professional development facilitator at CIT Solutions.
Q: How do I choose the right training provider and qualification?
A: There are so many training providers out there who can offer you a cheap Certificate IV or a fast tracked qualification that can be completed entirely online. If that’s what you’re looking for, then go for it. But learning to be a trainer and assessor takes time, effort and is a bit more financially demanding.
What to look for…
- A qualification that takes a blended learning approach which includes online and face-to-face learning. You will need time to understand, absorb, be assessed and practice in a safe learning environment where the facilitator is available to support and provide feedback to you. Take a look at the Program Structure of TAE40116 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (PDF 1Mb) from CIT Solutions. This program outlines exactly what to expect during your studies.
- Be assured you are learning from an experienced facilitator who can guide you through your learning in a way that suits you.
- Make sure the training provider is reputable and credible amongst your peer group. Have they been offering training for a long time and to what organisations? This will be a good indicator of the quality of the qualification and an assurance you won’t have the rug pulled out from under you.
- Does the training provider offer a customised qualification that can be related to your workplace or industry? It always helps if the learning is relevant and applicable to your current role.
- Do you require a local training provider with their own classrooms or do you need the training delivered in your organisation?
