12 May 2023

It’s Mental Health Month in May!

Build your organisation's resilience with our Mental Health training

Mental health issues can have a serious impact on organisations, resulting in reduced productivity, increased absenteeism and higher staff turnover. It can also lead to accidents and safety risks, poor customer service and decreased morale.

Organisations need to take proactive steps to protect their employees from the negative effects of mental health problems. One way that organisations can do this is by providing mental health training for their employees.

Mental health training offers a number of benefits for organisations, such as creating a supportive work environment, increasing employee engagement, improving morale and reducing absenteeism. It also helps to foster an inclusive culture that encourages openness and respect for those with mental health issues.

  • According to WorkSafe Victoria, mental health claims have increased by 24% over the last five years.
  • In 2018/19 there were 6,517 accepted mental health claims with an average cost of $45,305 for each claim.
  • The most common causes of mental health related compensation claims are stress (29%), depression (31%) and anxiety (21%).Post traumatic stress disorder also accounted for 11% of all claim costs in that year.
  • Evidence suggests that providing mental health training to employees can have a positive effect on reducing mental health claims.
  • A study conducted by the Centre of Excellence in Mental Health at the University of Sydney found that organisations who implemented regular mental health training saw a 3.7% reduction in workers compensation claims related to mental ill-health.
