Painting and Drawing: An Introduction

About this course

This course will take students through guided exercises exploring the basic principles of painting and drawing, Line - Shape - Tone - Colour – Design. Practices include tonal painting (black, white & grey), colour mixing (paint), colour painting, tonal drawing (charcoal), line drawing (pencil), perspective (line, pencil) and oil painting (paint supplied - tone, colour, shape).

Materials Required: Please bring to your class: (Please do not purchase any materials until you confirm the course is going ahead)
- Charcoal: Willow stick charcoal
- Graphite Pencils: 2b and 4b
- Kneadable Eraser and Pencil Eraser
- Pad of Acrylic Painting Paper (A4) or 5 Canvas Boards Minimum 12 x 9 inches - 30 x 20cm
- Pad of Cartridge Drawing Paper (A4)
- Water container, large jar or 2lt milk container cut in half, etc
During your first class, Dennis will confirm the following. Please do NOT buy paint or brushes before the first class unless you have acquired an 'art pack' from the Artists Shed.
- Acrylic Paint – Essential: Arylamine Yellow light or Cadmium yellow light, Phthalo Blue, Quinacridone Magenta, Titanium White. Artist quality such as Art Spectrum or Atelier, etc, recommended
- Selection of Bristle Painting Brushes
- Painting Palette
Quality paint and paper are available from specialist suppliers such as The Artists Shed (Fyshwick) and Eckersley's (Braddon, Phillip).
Two art packs specifically for this course are available at The Artists Shed.
1) Paint and brushes pack – Atelier acrylic paint and three brushes.
2) Pack two – Atelier acrylic paint, brushes, painting pad, drawing pad, willow charcoal and graphite pencils.
